Moore-Windrow Medical Building | 1961?
3rd Avenue and Osborn
This two-story OB/GYN office building solved the problem of parking by providing plenty of it in the shade beneath the concrete waffle slab, which used a brand new pretensioned concrete construction technique never before used in Arizona. The building is organized around a central garden court. Slot windows are protected by breezeblock screens. This building slipped away into obscurity as Chanen Construction purchased it and incorporated the building into their own headquarters. They left it freestanding but connected to their new volume with a bridge, and unified the two with a 1980s-era facade. The parapet on the left edge of the roof is part of that addition, presumably to help the massing of the new architecture blend with the older fin roof. The original structure is detectable once you pass through the new facade or approach from the alley in the back. A casual passer-by would never guess that a separate office building was cleverly hidden behind this newer facade! Two stairways retain the building's original expressive concrete form. They were cast on site and lifted into place.
